Pension Trustee Code of Conduct
On 24 June 2008, CFA Institute staged its global launch of its Pension Fund Trustee Code of Conduct in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The conduct of those who govern pension schemes significantly impacts the lives of millions of people around the world who are dependent on pensions for their retirement income. Consequently, it is critical that pension plans are overseen by a strong, well-functioning governing body in accordance with fundamental ethical principles of honesty, integrity, independence, fairness, openness, and competence. This Code of Conduct for Members of a Pension Scheme Governing Body represents best practice for the individual members of the pension governing body when complying with their duties to the pension scheme. Whether public or private, each pension scheme board that adopts the code will demonstrate its commitment to serving the best interests of participants and beneficiaries.
Depending on the nature and type of pension scheme, members of the governing body may have responsibility for overseeing the administration of benefits as well as the scheme’s investment decision-making process. All of the principles outlined in this code apply equally to the officials’ duties in each of these roles.
